1851C. Jacob Hansford is living Mill Street Newchurch [read Ventnor- see 1841C comment] , Isle of Wight with his 2nd wife, Ann, 4 of his children by Ann, and Lydia, one of his 2 children by Anna . So he has moved from High Street to Mill Street between 1847 and 1851. Mill Street changed to being called Pier Street between 1881 and 1891. High Street and Pier Street intersect at right angles close to the church, and in this census Jacob's house is in between the Parsonage and the Rose Inn.

The Rose Inn, 2016. Jacob Hansford lived next door to this in 1851C

Mill Street, Ventnor is given as one of the addresses for Hansford Bros in 1880s Ad - see further on

I think Jacob might have been bought out by his brother William, who did not consider him an asset after his bankruptcy: in the 1880s Hansford Bros. has premises in Mill Street . Jacob does not seem to flourish like William, who died a rich man . I have found the Rose Inn in the 1881C and the 1891C and there is not an upholsterers nearby. Have also looked for any Hansford in these censuses who might have been running the firm in Ventnor  and in 1881, at 22 Mill Street, George Millman, married to William's daughter Ann 1849, is a furniture salesman employing 2 people

1853. His second wife, Ann Hansford, also dies young -Isle of Wight Dec 1853

1853-1861. Jacob Hansford moves off the I of W, just across the water to Portsea.

No Hansfords living in Ventnor in 1891C. But, in 1881C,

at 22 Mill Street, Ventnor, 6 doors away from the Rose Inn, 2 of William's daughters are living: could his son in law, George Millman, be in charge of the shop

1861C. Cannot find on FMP. But on Ancestry, Jacob Hansford, cabinet maker, is living Little Southxxxx, 6 Clarke Place, Portsea. For Fyelia read Lydia! Have searched on name combinations with no surname

Jacob Hansford 52
Fyelia Hansford 24
Martha Hansford 15
Esther Hansford 3

Who is Esther aged 3?? Think she must be Esther Elizabeth Hansford born 31/3/1852, Ventnor, before his wife died! 3 could be 8?

1870. His daughter, Mary Ann Hansford, married Amos Bowyer Earwicker on 10/1/1870 in Southsea. He, Jacob Hansford, Dorking, late of Ventnor, I.W. -FMP. Dorking, Surrey, is a long way north of Portsea!

1871C. Cannot find on FMP, nor in Ancestry, looking anywhere in England. Maybe he is in the Channel Islands, where his brother started Hansfords Upholsterers in 1830- very young, only ~ 19/20. . There is a William Hansford, 60, upholsterer, in Ryde, also born West Milton, so likely a brother: he dies 1893, leaving £6200

1881C. Jacob Handford- mistranscribed - is living 15 Landport Street, Portsea. And his widowed daughter, Martha Cassell and her children are living at the same number, just over the page in the census! !
